Question
Assalaamu alaikum,
I want to know what the verse in Surat An-Nisa, verse 34, really means. We are mostly attacked with harsh remarks such as, "What kind of religion tells men to beat women?" Of course, no one will be attracted to Islam when he hears this.
Answer
Only in a few cases, after implementing all other peaceful remedies in resolving a marital dispute between spouses, would a husband be allowed to beat his wife in a symbolic way without actually doing her any physical harm. This is merely a way to express disapproval of unacceptable behavior, yet it is preferable not to resort to such a remedy as much as possible.
