Question

I purchased a residential home in 2004, and I lived in it until 2006. Then I moved to a different city, and I am planning to sell this house when the market is better. In the meantime, I am renting it out, and I living in a rented house in a different city. Do I pay zakat only on the rental income or on the rental income, plus the value of the property? Best regards.

Answer

As long as the property is being rented, and because there is no duplication in paying Zakah, you must pay Zakah on the revenue from the house. If, later, the renter has left the house, and you still have it on the market for sale, you would need to pay Zakah on the appraisal value of the house.
