Question

As-salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

Can a Muslim man attend a funeral for a person who passed away as a non-Muslim and was not related to them at all? Also, can a Muslim woman attend a funeral for a non-Muslim to whom she had no relation? The reason I separate the two is that I understand that Muslim women are not allowed to even attend the actual burial of a Muslim even if it were her husband or father (if I am not mistaken).

Answer

Attending funerals in general, for males and females, for Muslims and non-Muslims alike, is allowed, and the actual burial is included, unless a specific funeral is accompanied by something else that would make it prohibited. Meanwhile, is not recommended for women to attend funerals. Furthermore, it is not allowed for those women who cannot control their emotions, who act inappropriately by wailing, shouting, and acting in a way that shows their dissatisfaction with Allah’s decree.
