Alsalam alykom
I am currently renting a house. I am trying to save money to buy one. Is zakat due on this saving, given it is above nissab now?

Yes, all savings (for education, retirement, buying a house,..etc) are Zakatable money if all other conditions for paying Zakah are fulfilled.
